Getting There — Tesla Route & Charging
Route: Zurich → A3/A13 south → San Bernardino tunnel → Bellinzona → Locarno (~250 km, ~3 hrs)
Skip the Gotthard entirely — the San Bernardino route (via Chur) is slightly longer but much calmer, especially around Easter when the Gotthard can have multi-hour queues. It's a beautiful drive through Graubünden and you won't be sitting in traffic with two kids in the back.
Charging strategy: Charge fully at home before departure. The Model Y's range (~400–450 km) covers the round trip comfortably. Top up at a Supercharger around Chur on the way down if you like. Superchargers are also available in Bellinzona and around Lugano for easy mid-week charging.
Departure: Leave at a normal, civilised hour — around 09:00–10:00. You'll be in Locarno by lunchtime.
Return (Monday after lunch): Leave Locarno around 14:00, home by 17:00–18:00. Kids can unwind in the evening, Elisa is fresh for school on Tuesday.
Accommodation Recommendation
Best value strategy: Book a family apartment (Airbnb / holiday rental) in or near Locarno or Minusio for 5 nights. This area puts you close to Lake Maggiore, the Verzasca Valley, and Bellinzona, while being cheaper than Lugano.
What to look for:
- 2-bedroom apartment with kitchen (cook some meals to save money)
- Parking included (important for the Tesla — ideally with a standard outlet for overnight trickle charging)
- A property that participates in the Ticino Ticket program (most do)
Budget estimate: 5 nights × 120–140 CHF = ~600–700 CHF total for accommodation
Alternatives:
- Agriturismo / farmstay — rustic and fun for kids, often includes breakfast
- BnB Switzerland (bnb.ch) — affordable family-friendly B&Bs
- Camping — if you're adventurous, campsites around Tenero/Locarno are excellent and much cheaper
The Ticino Ticket — Your Secret Weapon
When you check in at a participating accommodation, each guest (age 6+) receives a free Ticino Ticket that gives you:
- Free unlimited public transport across all of Ticino (buses, trains, boats)
- Discounts on cable cars, museums, and attractions (typically 20–30% off)
Download the Ticino Ticket app before your trip and activate it with the code from your accommodation. Your 4-year-old travels free anyway.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1 — Arrival Day: Drive & Settle In
Morning: Leave Zurich around 09:00–10:00. Scenic drive via San Bernardino — the kids can nap in the car.
Lunchtime: Arrive in the Locarno area. Pick up groceries at a Migros or Coop for the apartment (much cheaper than eating out every meal).
Afternoon: Check into your accommodation. Stroll along the Locarno lakefront promenade — the palm trees and Mediterranean feel will surprise you. Let the kids run around on the Piazza Grande. Get gelato.
Evening: Cook at the apartment or grab pizza at a local pizzeria (Ticino has excellent, affordable Italian food — expect 15–20 CHF per pizza).
Cost estimate for the day: Charging ~15 CHF, groceries ~60 CHF, gelato ~15 CHF
Day 2 — Bellinzona Castles
Morning: Drive or take the train to Bellinzona (20 min). Visit the three UNESCO castles:
- Castelgrande — the biggest, with a lift from town and great ramparts for kids to explore
- Castello di Montebello — includes a small museum, fantastic views
- The walk between castles is part of the fun
Tip: The castle grounds are free to enter. Only the small museums inside cost a few CHF (discounted with Ticino Ticket).
Lunch: Picnic in the castle grounds (pack from the apartment) or eat at the Castelgrande restaurant terrace.
Afternoon: The 10-year-old might enjoy the Museo in Erba (children's art museum, hands-on and interactive). Or just explore Bellinzona's charming old town.
Evening: Back in Locarno. Easy dinner at the apartment.
Cost estimate: Transport free (Ticino Ticket), castle museums ~15 CHF for the family, lunch ~20 CHF
Day 3 — Verzasca Valley
Morning: Drive into the Verzasca Valley (30 min from Locarno). First stop: the Verzasca Dam — your 10-year-old will love it (this is the James Bond bungee jump dam from GoldenEye, though you'll just be looking!).
Main activity: The BoBosco Marble Trail — a magical 4.4 km family trail along the emerald-green Verzasca River from Sonogno down toward Gerra. It has 10 marble-rolling stations built into the landscape, plus playgrounds. Slightly downhill, manageable for the 4-year-old (consider a carrier for tired legs). Best trail in Ticino for young kids.
Note: Check that the BoBosco trail installations are open (typically from April, but confirm closer to the date). The water will be too cold for swimming in early April, but the turquoise colour is spectacular.
Lunch: Picnic by the river or grotto-style restaurant in Sonogno (simple local food, polenta, cheese).
Afternoon: Drive to Lavertezzo to see the iconic double-arched Ponte dei Salti stone bridge. Quick photo stop and short walk.
Evening: Relax at the apartment.
Cost estimate: Parking ~5–10 CHF, lunch ~40 CHF, marble trail free
Day 4 — Cardada Mountain + Ascona
Morning: Take the Cardada-Cimetta cable car from Orselina (just above Locarno). In 5 minutes you're at 1,340 m with views from Lake Maggiore to the highest peaks of Switzerland. There's a geological observation platform and easy walking paths. For the adventurous 10-year-old: a small adventure/climbing trail. The 4-year-old will enjoy the open spaces and the funicular ride itself.
Tip: Ticino Ticket gives a discount on the cable car.
Lunch: There's a restaurant at the top, or bring a picnic.
Afternoon: Head down and drive/walk to Ascona (10 min from Locarno). This is one of the prettiest lakeside towns in Switzerland. Walk the colourful waterfront, browse the shops, have gelato or coffee. The kids can throw stones in the lake.
Evening: Treat yourselves to dinner at a grotto — Ticino's rustic outdoor restaurants serving local dishes. Many are family-friendly and surprisingly affordable (budget 60–80 CHF for the family). Try risotto, polenta with braised meat, or local sausage.
Cost estimate: Cardada cable car ~50 CHF family, grotto dinner ~70 CHF
Day 5 — Lugano Day Trip (Easter Sunday)
Morning: Drive to Lugano (about 1 hour via the motorway, or scenic route through the Ceneri pass). Start with a walk along the Lungolago (lakefront) and through Parco Ciani — a gorgeous park with a playground right on the lake.
Late morning: Visit Swissminiatur in Melide (15 min south of Lugano) — an outdoor park with 130 miniature models of famous Swiss buildings, castles, and landmarks, plus a little train, bumper cars, and playgrounds. Perfect for both kids.
- Family day pass: 60 CHF (2 adults + kids)
- Open 09:00–18:00
Lunch: Eat at Swissminiatur's cafeteria or in Lugano's old town.
Afternoon: If energy allows, take the Monte San Salvatore funicular from Paradiso for spectacular lake views (Ticino Ticket discount). Or keep it relaxed: stroll Lugano's old town arcades and piazzas.
Evening: Drive back to Locarno. Easter dinner at the apartment (pick up some Colomba — Italian Easter cake — from a bakery).
Cost estimate: Swissminiatur 60 CHF, lunch ~40 CHF, charging ~10 CHF, optional funicular ~40 CHF family
Day 6 — Last Morning + Drive Home (Easter Monday)
Morning: Sleep in one last time. Then choose a relaxed farewell activity:
- Lido Locarno — pools, water slides, and play areas (indoor section year-round)
- Falconry in Locarno — birds of prey in free flight, kids love it
- Camellia Park — free, gorgeous with camellias in full bloom
- Or simply: coffee, gelato, and one last lakefront stroll
Lunch: Eat by the lake before heading out.
Early afternoon: Hit the road around 14:00. San Bernardino route back to Zurich (~3 hrs). The kids can nap in the car. Home by 17:00–18:00 — plenty of time to unwind before Elisa's school day.
Tip: Stop in Maienfeld or along the Rhine valley on the way back for a quick stretch — beautiful scenery through Graubünden.
Cost estimate: Morning activity ~30 CHF, lunch ~40 CHF, charging ~15 CHF

Packing Tips for April in Ticino
- Layers — April in Ticino can be 15–22°C in the valleys but cooler at altitude. Mornings can be fresh.
- Rain jackets — Spring showers are common. A lightweight rain jacket for everyone.
- Comfortable shoes — Hiking shoes or sturdy trainers for the Verzasca walk and castle exploring.
- Carrier/backpack for the 4-year-old — essential for longer walks.
- Sunscreen & hats — The southern sun is strong, especially near the lake and at altitude.
- Swimwear — For the Lido pools (lake swimming is too cold in April).
- Snacks & water bottles — For car rides and hikes.
Money-Saving Tips
- Ticino Ticket — Use it for every bus, train, and boat ride. The savings add up fast.
- Cook at the apartment — Breakfast and some dinners at "home" will halve your food costs.
- Picnic lunches — Buy bread, cheese, and cured meats from Migros/Coop and eat at castles, parks, and riverbanks.
- Free activities are everywhere — Lakefront walks, castle grounds, Camellia Park, river walks, playgrounds.
- Grottos over restaurants — Traditional grottos serve generous portions of simple food at fair prices.
- Tesla advantage — Your fuel costs are a fraction of what they'd be with a petrol car. Good Supercharger coverage along the San Bernardino and Gotthard routes.
- Book accommodation early — Easter week is popular in Ticino. Book your apartment as soon as possible.
Happy Easter in Ticino!
